There’s something about Sedona that’s hard to put into words, but you feel it the second you arrive. This place has an emotional and energetic draw (I feel the vortex helps with this) that nature lovers dream of. From hiking the crimson cliffs to gazing across expansive desert vistas, it’s not too difficult to find peace and escape the crowds, to create a moment that’s just for the two of you.
But if you’re here, you’re probably not just dreaming about Sedona, you’re trying to figure out how to actually make an elopement here happen. And that’s where things can start to feel a little overwhelming.
Whether you’re hiking up before sunrise with your boots laced tight or sipping coffee together while the desert wakes up around you, this place has a way of grounding you in the present. It’s no wonder couples from all over the world are drawn here to elope.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about how to elope in Sedona, from locations to timing to the little details most people don’t think about, so you can start picturing what your day could actually look like.

It’s not just the red rocks (although… they’re hard to beat).
It’s the feeling of being somewhere completely different… somewhere that makes the day feel intentional, grounded, and a little bit surreal in the best way.
Sedona has this way of slowing things down, and that’s what couples end up loving most.

The best time to elope is late fall through late winter, as crowds start to arrive in early spring. Summers are also less crowded, but they’re very hot and not as comfortable temperature-wise as the later months. Sunrise will always be quieter, but sunsets, while usually a little busier on the trails and lookouts, are equally as stunning.
Some locations are better with early morning sun rather than the setting sun, and vice versa. Sunsets typically lend to the buttery golden light and ignite the red rocks, especially after the sun dips behind the mountains.

I’ve spent a lot of time out here, scouting trails and soaking in the views. These are a few of my top picks for couples looking for a mix of beauty, adventure, and seclusion. I have other location options up my sleeve that I save for my clients, so reach out and let’s find THE perfect spot for you!
This spot has one of the best views in Sedona, but it takes a little effort to get there. You’ll either need a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle or be up for a 6-mile round-trip hike. It’s best at sunset, and the drive back in the dark gives us a chance for those unique, just-married headlight shots. It’s worth it. (Kenzie and Joseph’s elopement still gives me goosebumps!)

This is one of the most iconic views in Sedona. The trail is short but spicy—definitely not for beginners or anyone nervous about heights. I usually recommend holding your ceremony at the base and hiking up for portraits. This spot gets busy, so depending on the day, we may need to use the Sedona Shuttle. I help coordinate all of that, so you don’t have to worry about logistics.
My favorite part is this beautiful overlook, which is easier to access and amazing at sunrise or just before sunset.

Bell Rock is one of the easier hikes in Sedona, being just about 0.8 miles out-and-back. Even though it is one of the more popular locations here, there are still plenty of options for a quiet and secluded ceremony—you just have to know where to look!
If you’re having a hard time choosing between locations (because honestly, they’re all incredible), I help my couples narrow it down based on what they want their day to feel like, not just what looks good in photos. You can reach out here!

Depending on your chosen location, you might need to get a permit. Many of the most popular ceremony spots fall under the jurisdiction of the Coconino National Forest or the Red Rock Ranger District, both of which may require a permit for groups over a certain size or for any formal ceremony setup. The rules can vary depending on trail use, group size, and the type of event, so it’s always best to double-check. That’s where I come in during our Sedona elopement planning process!
I help you navigate all the nitty-gritty logistics, so that everything goes smoothly and stress-free for both of you! And even if your chosen location doesn’t require a permit, we’ll still want to be respectful of Leave No Trace principles and honor the land we’re standing on. That’s a non-negotiable in my book.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get your marriage license in Sedona, as the Sedona Magistrate Court does not issue marriage licenses. The two closest County Clerk’s offices are located in Flagstaff and Camp Verde, so you must visit either the Yavapai County Superior Court in Camp Verde or the Coconino County Superior Court in Flagstaff.
You can get your marriage license in any county in AZ, even if you’re not getting married in that county. Marriage license costs $98, but always double-check for the most up-to-date information in your chosen county.
You’ll need 2 witnesses and an officiant to make it official. Luckily, anyone can get ordained online and be your officiant, if you’d like your friend or family member to do it! As your photographer, I am happy to be a witness, and if it’s just you two, you can ask another trailgoer to be your witness too! Your license is good for 12 months, but you’ll need to submit the completed marriage license to the same superior court within 10 days of your ceremony – either in person or by mail.

I always recommend booking a vacation rental in Sedona or the Village of Oak Creek. Rentals give you way more space, better lighting, and a cozy, beautiful backdrop for getting ready photos (way better than a hotel room).
If you’re planning a micro wedding or want to celebrate with a small group afterward, I suggest searching VRBO and using the filter for “allows events.” Some of these homes are perfect for an intimate gathering or even a ceremony backup spot in case of bad weather.

I photograph like someone who knows these are the good old days. Because they are.
My camera is a soulful extension of how I see and feel my surroundings. I’m always watching for what makes us human. The touch of a hand, the crack in a voice, the light in someone’s eyes when they’re really seen.
Photography, for me, is less about the pose and more about the art of connection between one another.
