Winter Elopement in Lake Tahoe

There’s something incredibly romantic about a winter elopement in Lake Tahoe with the crisp air, soft light, and magic available only in this season. Ashley and Bobby’s day was originally intended to be a styled shoot, however… Once they realized the amazing Christa from Mountain High Weddings was playing the part of the officiant, they asked if she could actually marry them. And so she did! And it was incredible!

Getting Ready in Hope Valley

We kicked off the day tucked into the snowy woods of Hope Valley, about 20 minutes southwest of South Lake Tahoe. I adore this spot. It’s a total escape from the crowds and chaos around the lake, and it’s got this stillness to it that feels so right for eloping.

Ashley and Bobby helped each other get ready in one of the cozy yurts at Desolation Hotel! The Yurt was such a unique place for this special moment, and it was also nice and warm with a crackling fire in the backdrop as they changed. It was simple and soulful, just them taking in the moment before we set out.

A Sunset Elopement Ceremony

We made our way back to South Lake Tahoe for the ceremony at one of my favorite hidden gems—a meadowy beach where Mark Twain once had a cabin. The views here are straight up unreal! You get those snow-dusted peaks, golden light, and the calmest waters.

Ashley wore a lace top and flowy skirt with the dreamiest snow boots (yes, please), and Bobby looked so sharp in his plaid blazer and boutonnière pop. Their vows were personal, honest, and full of feeling. Christa brought such a calm, grounding energy to the moment, and yeah… I definitely teared up behind the camera.

Winter Elopement Planning Tips for Lake Tahoe

Eloping in Tahoe during the winter is unforgettable, but it does take a little extra planning. Here are a few tips to make your snowy celebration smooth and safe:

  • Choose accessible trails and locations: Snow can change everything, from trail access to parking. Look for spots that are plowed regularly or require minimal hiking in deep snow. I can help scout locations that offer stunning backdrops and are realistic to get to with winter conditions in mind.

  • Dress warmly: Layers are always going to be your best friend, not only in winter. However, you should DEFINITELY be extra prepared for eloping in wintery conditions. Think cozy shawls, fleece-lined leggings, wool socks, and waterproof boots. (Trust me, cold toes are no joke!) And yes, you can absolutely rock a wedding dress or suit with a warm base underneath.

  • Add in winter elopement activities: The beauty of a winter elopement is that you get to lean into the season and enjoy activities only available during this time of year. Want to snowshoe to a quiet overlook? Go skiing the morning of? Cuddle up with cocoa by a fire pit as the sun dips behind the mountains? It’s all possible.

  • Pack smart: Hand warmers, extra socks, thermoses of hot drinks, and maybe even a backup pair of gloves, all these little details can make a big difference. A backpack with your essentials (and a little space for snacks!) is always a win.

  • Plan your day around daylight: Winter days are shorter, which means timing things correctly is extra important. Light fades fast, especially in the mountains. Planning your ceremony and portraits earlier in the day (or at golden hour) ensures we capture all that dreamy glow before it dips behind the peaks. I’ll help you build a timeline that works with the winter light instead of racing against it.
